A new priority of the U.S. Department of Transportation is an age-old idea: Transport freight by ship for as long as possible. The DOT is proposing designated shipping channels known as Marine Highways, and one may be leading to a port near you. New Isetta to Solve Our Transportation Woes
A Dutch designer says resurrecting the microcar is the key to reducing congestion and maximizing efficiency. Ralph Panhuysen, whose Space Efficient Vehicle (SEV) seats three in a sideways V formation and parks two abreast like shoes in a shoebox, dreams of a world in which small, lightweight cars sip fuel and travel two-abreast in a single lane....

9-Day Traffic Jam Stretches 62 Miles
Whatever traffic hell you endured getting to work this morning is nothing compared to what’s happening in Beijing, where a mammoth traffic jam is entering its ninth day with no relief in sight. Thousands of trucks have jammed National Expressway 110 since Aug. 14, creating a traffic jam stretching 100 kilometers. Authorities attribute the...

Ford Mustang V6 Gets 48.5 MPG Around Bristol Race Track
For a long time, any Mustang other than the V8 was scoffed and/or laughed at, and with good reason. Having driven my 4-banger Mustang across country, I can attest that despite its phenomenal gas mileage, it struggles up hills, lacks any sort of “oomph” and it even sounds terrible. Ford has countered with a 305 horsepower V6 that gets...

Chinese “Bus” Concept Straddles Highways
I complain about traffic congestion a lot, until I am reminded that compared to some parts of the world, America has it easy. I could not imagine living in Moscow or Beijing, where four-hour traffic jams are the norm. China faces an especially daunting task as their population continues to expand and urbanize; you can only build so many highways...

The workhorse of taxi fleets across the U.S. is the Ford Crown Victoria. Also popular as a cop car, the Crown Vic is known for its body-on-frame design (easy to repair) and impressive cargo and interior space. One area it does not excel in is gas mileage, as the big V8 engine aren’t all that efficient to begin with. Task them with the stop-and-go...
