  When Volvo introduced the C30, its smallest model in a long time, the aim was to try to draw a younger clientele. As Mercedes-Benz had realized in the early 1990s, its traditional loyal customers were literally dying off and in an increasingly competitive environment, the attributes which had made it the first choice may not have been enough for a new and younger generation of customers. It needed products that looked young and 'felt young, hence the SLK. The C30, with its unique styling and personality, helped the Swedish carmaker to get the attention of the new generation and to some extent, it worked well. In Malaysia though, the high import duty made it more expensive than it should have been and sales were limited. It was appealing but up against the Mini and BMW 1-Series, it was not easy for many to justify spending RM215,000 (without insurance) and 18 units were sold in 2008 and 2009 well below the 50 units that the company had expected to sell annually. Theres not much that Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) can do about the import duties and assembling the model locally to reduce the duties is definitely out of the question. A senior Volvo executive could only say that if Malaysian customers wanted to a lower price, then they would have to ask their government to lower the import duties. Carmakers may find it challenging when taxes push their prices up too high but they dont protest since they have no right to do so. Since thats the case, the company is not expecting the <b>...</b>
